Bitumen in Asphalt

Bitumen in Asphalt

Bitumen in Asphalt, naturally, one application of bitumen in industries that we are all familiar with is the road construction industry. Bitumen is a substance that, due to its adhesion, can connect different asphalt road materials to each other. Also, because bitumen has waterproof properties, it can create a smooth and uniform coating on the road surface for cars to pass through. Basically, road builders have several main uses for the use of bitumen in the road construction industry, such as asphalt production and road reconstruction. However, how do road engineers use bitumen to produce asphalt.

Bitumen Application in Asphalt

Road engineers use the adhesive and waterproof properties of bitumen to produce asphalt for roads. In such cases, road engineers use emulsion bitumen, infiltration bitumen, blown bitumen and other types of bitumen. They also have different methods of applying asphalt to the road. Therefore, the types of bitumen applications in the asphalt industry are:

1- Hot Rolled Asphalt:

Road engineers heat bitumen to a high temperature and mix it with rock mixtures to create hot asphalt. The use of soluble bitumen is appropriate in such a case

2- Stone Mastic Asphalt:

One type of application of asphalt bitumen is to use it to produce stone mastic asphalt. This type of asphalt is durable and highly resistant to deformation due to its type of construction.

3- Open Graded Asphalt:

Another type of application of bitumen in asphalt is to produce open graded asphalt. This type of asphalt has a porous and porous structure and allows water to pass through its pores. Road builders use this type of asphalt more often in wet weather to reduce the risk of car skidding.

4- Tack Coat:

Sometimes, road builders use Tack Coat to connect the old road layer to the new asphalt layer. Therefore, in this type of asphalt bitumen application, bitumen acts as an adhesive to cause new asphalt layers to adhere to old layers.

5- Sprayed insulation:

Sprayed insulation is actually a type of bitumen application in asphalt in which road builders apply asphalt in the form of a spray and spray onto the road surface.

6- Bitumen in asphalt slurry surface:

The two-frame bitumen surface method is another type of asphalt bitumen application. In this method, road builders apply a mixture of bitumen stone compounds and water to the road surface to protect it from impact and cracking. In such a method, the use of mc bitumen is suitable.

Bitumen Uses in Road Reconstruction

Most of the uses of bitumen in the road construction industry that we explained in the previous section were about building roads. But one use of bitumen in asphalt is also in repairing and rebuilding roads. Over time, cracks and crevices develop in roads. In this way, road builders can use pre-mixed bitumen and chip-seal bitumen to seal these cracks and crevices. Also, this use of asphalt bitumen can add a new layer to the roads that increases their durability, life, and flexibility.
