Penetration bitumen 40/60

40/60 penetration grade bitumen is a type of bitumen that is used for insulation and asphalt construction, especially in areas with hot climates, due to its standard penetration grade. In fact, the degree of permeability is one of the important characteristics of bitumen and based on this characteristic, different types of bitumen are produced for different weather conditions.

For example, 40/60 bitumen is suitable for hot areas; But for cold areas, another type of bitumen with a different degree of permeability will be needed.

This type of bitumen is produced based on the European standard DIN EN 12591:99 and is used as a standard penetration grade base. The degree of permeability of penetrating bitumen is 40/60, which means that bitumen penetrates to a depth of 4 to 6 mm in a period of 5 seconds.

This degree of penetration indicates the hardness of bitumen and shows its characteristics for use in road construction and asphalt production.

Application of penetration bitumen 40/60

Bitumen with a penetration grade of 60/40 is usually used in road construction and asphalt industry as a type of asphalt penetration bitumen. The viscosity of bitumen is dependent on temperature, and this thermoplastic property of bitumens makes them soften at high temperatures and harden at low temperatures.

These features make bitumen adhere well to different surfaces and remain stable over time and under different conditions.

The advantages of bitumen 40/60 include things such as resistance to hot weather conditions, proper strength and hardness, suitable for use in street paving, road construction and road repairs in hot areas.

How to produce penetration bitumen 40/60

Pure bitumen is produced from the distillation of crude oil during the vacuum baton aeration process. Vacuum baton is the name of the substance deposited in the distillation tower in vacuum. By being exposed to air and creating transverse bonds between molecules, this material turns into a black and sticky substance, namely 40/60 export bitumen. The degree of bitumen permeability depends on the amount of oxidation on the vacuum baton.

Bitumen with a penetration degree of 40/60 has a penetration between 40 and 60 tenths of a millimeter and a softening point between 48 and 56 degrees Celsius. Bitumen with a penetration grade of 40/60 has thermoplastic properties, which are similar to synthetic resin materials that become softer when heated and harden in cold weather.
