The increase in bitumen production in Iran, in addition to China’s high demand for importing this product, has made China one of the largest and most important importers of bitumen from Iran. It is worth noting that one of the most important markets for Iranian bitumen is China. According to economic studies of Iranian petroleum products, Iran exports bitumen directly and indirectly to more than 40 countries in the world, of which China is important due to its proximity.
Increasing the quality of bitumen, in addition to familiarizing itself with the needs of the Chinese bitumen market and the specifications of bitumen required by the Chinese, and matching the amount of Iranian bitumen production with the amount required by China, is considered one of the most important goals of increasing bitumen to China. The capacity for bitumen production in Iran is high, so that more than 6 million tons of bitumen are produced in the country annually, of which China needs about one million tons.
Despite the fact that the price of exported bitumen is higher than that of bitumen sold domestically, bitumen exports to China are considered another profitable export of Iran. The export of petroleum products such as bitumen is that these products, due to the small volume of shipments, having a large number of buyers and applicants, having various export methods, having low bank transactions compared to crude oil exports, are part of the conditions for easy export.
Having favorable export conditions compared to crude oil, in addition to high income generation, has made bitumen exports to China particularly important for the country’s economy. Bitumen exports to China are carried out via the sea route of Bandar Abbas or Bushehr.
Bitumen Export to India
India is one of the countries that has very strong political relations with Iran, which has created better conditions for trade. Bitumen is one of the products that is widely used in asphalt production, which is why a large amount of bitumen is imported to this country annually.
According to bitumen statistics, in the first half of 2018, India, the UAE, Bangladesh, Kenya and Myanmar were among the five countries that had the highest bitumen imports, respectively. According to bitumen export statistics, the share of this product’s exports to India is about 15 percent.

The African continent has a vast export capacity due to its non-payment to Iranian exporters. According to statistics, more than 50 African countries have had about 1000 billion trade during the year, more than sixty percent of which is related to imports. According to statistics, this country is the largest importer of petrochemical products, including bitumen, which it receives annually.
Bitumen for CIS countries
Product exports to Armenia are carried out by land through the Norduz border due to the fact that the two provinces share a border. This country has long had very good political and trade relations with Iran, and bitumen and many other products are exported to this country annually.

Bitumen Exporting to Turkey
Turkey is one of Iran’s northwestern neighbors and is considered one of the most popular and sought-after destinations for various goods exports. The favorable political relations between Iran and Turkey have made these two countries very good business partners for each other. Export goods are transported by three methods: land, air and sea. Bitumen exporting to Turkey are carried out from the Jolfa border, which is located on the southern bank of the Aras River in East Azerbaijan.
The Bazargan border is another border located in Maku County, West Azerbaijan Province, and exports are also carried out through this route.
